Defining Moments Contest:

Okay so I thought that since my book has “personalized” definitions about bird terminology,   I’d get a few readers into the act. I want to hear your definitions of actual bird terms. You can post them on Facebook or here on my website.  Both feed into my email. The definitions don’t have to be accurate, just fun to read, and not too scandalous. And since I’m don’t want to make any enemies right before I launch a book I’m just going to say that the first one to post is the winner of a signed copy of the book. I will be posting these requests at random times, just to be semi-annoying. And you’ll have to give me your address to send you a copy.

Okay drum roll…

Define the term, keep it clean:

AFTERSHAFT

A double feather that grows from the shaft of a body feather. An after-shaft is important in maintaining warmth and is known to occur in grouse, quail, and relatives.

Let’s start with the word itself. BIRD….the young of a feathered vertabrate. Not to be confused with an obsence gesture, which is also known as “The Bird”. Somehow if you mix it all up so that it confuses people (like this email) then it is simply “for the birds”.

I loved the book! I can’t give it “the bird”, but it is definitely worthy of two thumbs up. I am anxiously waiting to see how you spread your wings next.
