Things I learned on my book trip to LA:
When I’m on I5 nothing is quite as satisfying as having that little blinking blue ball on my phone to reassure me I’m not lost, just in transition. Thank you Iphone.
I love dressing boys in middle school up in a wig and sash in the name of good writing. They don’t mind the messy hair or the applause. Now if I could just cast a spell on these boys to keep them reading novels in high school…
SoCal is not all crowds, amusement parks and traffic. It’s also beautiful and peaceful. And warm. Did I say warm? Not that I’m complaining about the snow at home, but it was nice to walk on the beach in my naked feet in November.
Vromans and Once Upon a Time Bookstore are MARVELOUS independent bookstores.
Not all school lunches are created equally. Some involve Tilapia (Flintridge Prep).
Regardless of where kids go to school the librarians are the gatekeepers and champions of good books! We can’t afford to cut our budgets so deeply that we lose the enthusiasm and access they give the kids they serve. Okay, I knew that before, but this trip reinforced the concept.
Jamie Weiss Chilton is the best agent in the world and a deeply cool person to go to bookstores with. I knew that too, but it was fun to hang out. Thanks Jamie.
And thanks Daniela for your drawing of a wolf. He’s wild and wonderful, just like you.
