I had a wonderful time in Littleton, Colorado this week. I met hundreds of wonderful students who are curious about books and excited about writing. They asked bright interesting questions and listened so attentively. It was great!
I had this funny thought as I was standing in the cozy library at Goodard Middle School. What would the world be like if JK Rowling had given up? I mean who would ever have believed that a woman on welfare, writing in a cafe with her son in a stroller by her side would change the landscape of reading? It’s not like she she invented the genre, but in a way she did. She started something with all her wickedly funny and intricate tales of magic and conspiracy and growing up wizard. And there have been amazing authors who have followed her and written books that have kept the fire of interest burning. But how could she have known? Obviously she couldn’t. We can’t. We just get up and start. Or we don’t.
I’m glad she did.
